This week I found a letter from the great penman Francis B. Courtney and I decided to copy it for my own handwriting practice. I took out my Platinum Preppy 02 which has the extra fine nib. It is inked with Platinum black.

I continued my business penmanship practice by copying the biography of the great penmanship EC Mills from zanerian.com. A few weeks ago, I also copied JJ Bailey’s biography. I find copying these biographies a good way to practice writing and to learn something new at the same time. This week, I am focusing on getting […]

When I write by hand I come under the spell of the forms and the magic and mystery of who I am and how I show up in this world—the confused, shaky self, the graceful easy moments, or the part that doesn’t know what to say next. The letters are the marks left behind, the […]

First we have a post by u/pencilmancer from r/Calligraphy on Reddit. I am always impressed by changing colors without a letter and this person did a create job with that. They also let the entire sentence go from blue to more yellowish as it went on. Also, look at the capital S. The flourish is […]

I stumbled across an archive of Certificates from the Zanerian College. Here is a link to the webpage: http://www.zanerian.com/ZanCertificates.html. Take a look through the certificates! It is amazing to see the quality of penmanship! At the bottom are also two model certificates penned by C.P. Zaner himself. I especially like the Ornamental Script model.

We start today with a post by u/methosofninive from r/fountainpens on Reddit. I love the handwriting and purple/green color combination. I also like the package that the inks came in. I’m not sure the package has handwriting or printed cursive on it. Either way, I like the cursive! We follow up with a post from […]

Last week I continued to work on my business penmanship. When there is nothing specific to copy, I open a Wikipedia article and copy the text from part of it. Last week, I copied from the article on George Bickham the Elder who was a master writer and engraver. The first portion of the text […]

We all know that handwriting is unfortunately disappearing from the world. Many schools don’t teach cursive anymore and many people can’t even read cursive. But there is no doubt that a handwritten letter is much more personal than a typed letter. It’s a great way to show a friend or customer that you care about […]
